The panelists included Paul Schneider (Ph.D., SVP Business Development at dominKnow Inc.), Praveena Mitran (Digital Learning Lead at Bahwan CyberTek), and Rohan Bhosle (Associate Director at Harbinger Group). “Content modernization refers to extending the life of learning content that an organization has already invested in – by keeping it relevant, current, and fresh”.

Dr. Vikas Joshi set the pace of the discussion with this simple explanation of the core theme.

According to Praveena, modernization entails more than merely switching technologies or making the transition from Flash to HTML5. It’s all about what it would take to attain the anticipated business outcomes, she said.

Paul’s connect with modernization stems from his interest in ‘what’s next’. His approach to modernization is learner-centric with a specific focus on enabling people to develop content that aligns with their exact moment of need.

Industry data reveals how there are significant investments made by organizations in various aspects of their learning content.

According to Brandon Hall Group’s Learning Benchmarking Study, over 35% of the L&D budget is allocated to content, as much as seven figures worth in many large organizations. The image below tells the whole story. That’s where content modernization’s drivers come into play.

What’s driving modernization – Disruptions in eLearning

Throughout the decade eLearning industry has not just survived but thrived and grown many folds. According to Dr. Joshi, if there’s one overarching driver for content modernization, it’s the technology disruptions that have happened over a period of time. Right from the times of the internet to the mobile revolution with iPad, the cellular phones, the BYOD, and now the remote learning. Each of these disruptions is a driver of modernization, he elaborated.

Extrapolating from his team’s experience of helping a variety of customers with their modernization requests, Dr. Joshi classified modernization requests into the following categories:

“These requests give us a lens to determine what kind of strategies to use”, Dr. Joshi explained.

What was interesting and insightful about the panel discussion was the in-depth analysis of some of the hot buttons in content modernization. Praveena spoke from the perspective of an instructional designer, emphasizing on putting the learner in the middle of the entire experience. “We must start with where learners are”, she insisted. She touched upon user-centric models such as CCAF (Context, Challenge, Activity, and Feedback) which help develop a successful implementation strategy for modernization.

Paul opted to focus more on enablement. “Just a responsive design is not enough,” he said. “You need to have the right tools that help you do that”. While emphasizing on the aspect of‘enabling learning’Paul introduced the idea of a ‘universal design’ and elaborated on its significance.

Gamification: An Effective Strategy to Enhance Learning Outcomes

Gamification is a great prospect to consider when searching for an approach to enhance the learning outcomes of a training program. It could be the most straightforward strategy to boost learner satisfaction and engagement. What is gamification, and how can it be leveraged for developing a forward-looking eLearning content strategy?  This must be on the top of the mind of any Learning & Development (L&D) or HR leader in today’s time.

When people hear the word “gamification,” they immediately think of a computer game. They are right on the basic idea, but this is not quite what gamification in content development entails.

What is Gamification?

Gamification is the addition of game mechanics to a user interface through the use of marketing or instructional content. It is a method of repurposing information that takes advantage of game motivations. Gamification, according to Dr. Joshi is the application of gaming aspects to a process that is otherwise mundane. The core purpose of gamification is to increase involvement and improve outcomes.

Gamification has gained a lot of traction as a result of the Internet and other new technologies.  And, learning & development leaders (L&D) have taken notice. Everyone is probably more familiar with gamification than they realize. Even if it isn’t immediately acknowledged, it is already a common practice. And here is why it should matter to any company whose primary goal is to improve employee satisfaction and engagement.

Why Should It Matter?

Some people find Gamification challenging and a tedious task to perform. But, according to Cleon, gamification is not at all complicated and it is going to be the next big thing in content production. It is more about the attitude of how to put the gamification elements together. The complete thought process compiled to create the gamified content is what makes gamification interesting and worth considering. Gamification is exciting and engaging not only for content designers but also for learners.

On their first game, Midmark received overwhelmingly positive feedback from their internal teams. Ninety one percent (91%) of them not only found the game beneficial to their learning but, most importantly, enjoyed participating. The drive to compete and beat one’s previous score is what motivates learners to keep going, said Cleon. Self-directed learning is at par, he added.

The motivational aspect of gamification is supported by numbers from a 2021 market share analysis report.


Chris Bryant, on the other hand, considers gamification and the data that supports it to be critical. Gamification extends beyond the standard eLearning training model. It converts a commendable number of learners towards training by making it fun and engaging. It includes surprises, feedback, and numerous constituent opportunities for learners to try new things. Gamification, when done correctly, reduces the stigma associated with training. It shifts employee’s mindset from ‘I have to’ to ‘I want to’.  “It is undeniably the way of the future”, he continued, “and there is no way we are turning our back.”

Thus, there are numerous benefits of introducing gamification in the workplace. This is the reason why more and more businesses are turning to gamified content development as it boosts employees’ intrinsic motivation, increases learner’s engagement and competitiveness, influences behavioral change, incorporates the spirit of competition, sense of achievement, and leads to better employee retention.

The beautiful thing about gamification is that it provides the creators varied approaches that can be adopted. Scores, Leaderboards, Quizzes, Badges, Levelling, Challenges, Progress bar, Rewards, Timer are some of the specialized and widely used gamification elements. Nike, Starbucks, Duolingo, Fitbit are some of the well-known brands that have made gamification an intrinsic part of their offerings.

Gamification isn’t just a fancy buzz word. It’s a glue that binds multiple aspects within an organization. The benefits of gamification in corporate training and learning cannot be overlooked.

Making Learning Available in the Flow of Work Using AI

There has been a drastic change in the work culture post-pandemic. Over the past year, we have observed the transition from everyday office to remote and flexible work environments, and the growing importance of upskilling and reskilling. However, one area that needs due diligence is the need to change how employees learn on the job. Organizations are required to create learning opportunities that support real-time performance scrutiny and are integrated into daily workflow, allowing employees to learn while on the job.

According to a survey of over 4,000 learning and development (L&D) and business professionals, when asked how their workplace learning could be improved, the most common response was that people don’t have enough time to acquire new skills. He described the concept as pertaining to informal learning that employees do throughout the day and then apply it to the tasks they’re currently working on.

Employees rarely consider their organization’s learning management system (LMS) as an exciting, and flexible tool to enhance their skills. A traditional corporate LMS at times is merely a bland collection of clickable PowerPoint lectures and exams. Finding appropriate learning content comes at a cost of too many unnecessary clicks. Most of the time the learning content is long and complex. This makes it difficult to retain the attention of the employee for long. On top of that, employee forgetfulness has been an emerging pattern because of an employee’s altered focus. These learners tend to forget the majority of what they learn, particularly when newly acquired knowledge and skills aren’t implemented right away or reinforced regularly.

An employee’s pain increases when managers decide on what courses learners should complete and by when. In this manner, they are bound to follow a rigid learning pattern.  Also, when asked to devote time to formal learning, an average modern employee finds it challenging to square up. The reason being, innumerable tasks lined up in a day, pressing deadlines, and their involvement in multiple projects within an organization. Employees become tired, dejected, and have little free time as a result of the relentless juggling in between projects.
