Digitization of Classroom based Safety Training Program for a Wind Turbine Manufacturer
About the Client
The client is a Denmark headquartered manufacturer, seller, installer, and servicer of wind turbines. It is one of the largest wind turbine companies in the world, with manufacturing plants in Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Romania, United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Australia, China, and the United States. The client employs more than 21,000 people globally.
Since inception, the client followed a ritual of conducting a day-long instructor-led training (ILT) session on topics such as General Transport and Safety. The training was aimed at a target audience comprising primarily of transport staff from transport companies or those who were going to be involved with transport, and handling of wind turbine sets.
On the other hand, the transport fleet was increasing gradually with the growth in business. With every new addition to the fleet, it was getting difficult to conduct classroom training sessions. There was an evident need to transform the instructor-led trainings into interactive, instructionally sound, and engaging digital learning courses. To meet the learning needs of the global target audience, these courses were also to be made available in nine additional languages other than English. It was also required to make them device and platform agnostic.
Harbinger team worked collaboratively with the client to create an engaging learning experience for this topic which was very close to their heart. The requirement was broken down into two key components and different team members with specific skill sets were allocated under the able guidance and leadership of project managers from both ends to accomplish the task and deliver an end product which would meet the business requirements in a specified budget and timeline.
Instructionally, the course had a mentor driven approach, the topics were broken down into eight micro modules followed by a course and an assessment. The overarching theme was to learn by exploration. Learners were required to solve a challenge associated with each micro module; each challenge mapped to the course objectives and tested a combination of knowledge and comprehension.
A truck driver was chosen to be the mentor because he/she represented the primary target audience, which would make it relatively easier for the audience to relate to him/her and accept the information presented readily. The learner’s journey through the course was designed as a travel expedition, each micro module in the course appeared like a milestone that would lead the learner towards their final destination—the course completion certificate.
Upon successfully completing the course assessment, the learner was presented with a ‘My Promise to The Client’ screen. This screen contained an acceptance and commitment form, which the learner was to digitally sign to mark the course as complete. The primary objective of the addition of this screen was to reinforce a sense of accountability in the learners for their behavior, others, and the components which they were responsible for transporting.
From the technology perspective, Harbinger had the responsibility of ensuring that the course was platform & device agnostic and the English version could be easily localized to nine additional languages. Keeping this in mind, it was recommended to build this course using Harbinger’s custom HTML5-XML architecture. This architecture not only ensured device and platform compatibility but also made the localization process less effort intensive.
With the help of this program, the client has been able to increase the outreach of this important safety program for the transport personnel – one of their key business stakeholders and contributors. This was also a commendable demonstration of their vendor relationships, it clearly showed that they do not only care about the components that they manufacture and sell but are also concerned for the third party fleets are used for transporting these components.
Apart from this some evident benefits have been the reduction of logistical and operational costs of running classroom sessions. A standardized training program instead, in multiple languages for their audience across the globe, serves as a more effective alternate.
